As the school year comes to a close, WCHS students continue to be recognized for their outstanding efforts throughout the year.

Sophomore Katy Adair was selected to represent Wright City High School at the Missouri Scholars Academy this summer at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Founded in 1985, the Missouri Scholars Academy was established to provide educational experiences and enrichment opportunities which may differ significantly from those provided in the more traditional high school setting. The Academy is administered by the University of Missouri, and is funded by MU, MSA alumni and friends, various Missouri Corporations, and a Student Activity Fee.

Juniors Tayeb Ihekoronye and Phillip Janowski were selected to represent Wright City High School at this summer’s Missouri Boys State sponsored by the American Legion on the campus of Central Missouri State University.  The American Legion Boys State of Missouri is an eight-day hands on experience in the operation and fundamentals of government. Missouri Boys State draws together the best and brightest high school juniors to help lead them down the path of individual success and leadership through "doing," not just learning.

Sophomore Joe Durand and freshmen Dakota Huse and Emily Janowski were selected as recipients of the Missouri Valley Young Achievers award from Wright City High School. Missouri Valley Young Achievers is a program of the ILN – International Leadership Network. Its mission is to develop and implement programs that empower youth to succeed.  Missouri Valley Young Achievers are students who are good citizens in their schools and community, school officers and leaders, helpful role models, competent scholars and volunteers.

As the countdown begins to the final days of the school year, many important events are ahead for Wright City High School.  Student schedule requests are being tabulated and scheduling for the 2012-2013 school year and students should expect to see a copy of their schedule for next year by May 7th  and schedule changes will be made until the last day of classes on May 22nd.

Wright City High School will be hosting a Freshmen Orientation night for incoming 9th grade students and their parents on Wednesday May 9th.  Parents and students will be in the building to meet the teachers, take a tour, and have any questions about high school answered.

One of the best nights of the year will occur on Wednesday May 16th as we celebrate Awards Night at WCHS.  A multitude of awards will be handed out that evening and students will be recognized for their outstanding scholastic achievement throughout the year.  Seniors students receiving scholarships will be recognized that evening as well in anticipation of graduation on May 20th.

Time flies when you are having a great time and it seems like this year has flown by.  Students, faculty, and staff continue to push towards excellence each and every day as the end of the year is in sight.

It is a pleasure to be the principal at Wright City High School, a building of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to success.

November 10
November

The cool air of fall has arrived, winter sports practices have begun, and the students, faculty, and staff members at Wright City High School are beginning to push toward the end of the first semester.

Wright City High School will honor our local veterans with an assembly on Friday November 11th at 1:45 p.m.  Abby Jackson, WCHS counselor, has worked tirelessly to put together a great program that will honor the men and women from each branch of the service.  The WCHS choir will perform and selected students will read essays and poems about the freedom assured to Americans through the sacrifice of our Armed Forces.

Since 2006, Wright City High School has operated on a ten block schedule with a built in seminar each 3rd period on Gold days.  For the 2011-2012 school year, the WCHS Leadership team made bold changes to the seminar period to ensure both academic and social success for all students.  This year each seminar student fills out a goal sheet for the day, complete with pages read during Sustained Silent Reading time and work to be completed during seminar.  During each six week grading period, seminar students meet twice individually with his/her seminar teacher to discuss academic progress, attendance, and behavior.  Additionally, each seminar teacher is given 25 minutes of academic advisement time each seminar to discuss topics such as study skills and time management with our 9th and 10th grade students and college, scholarship, ACT, and career planning with our 11th and 12th grade students.  The feedback from our students and staff about the changes to seminar has been extremely positive.  Take time to check in with your student to ask about all of the great things happening during seminar at WCHS.

Ambassadors will also get the opportunity to develop statewide action plans for underage drinking prevention and help plan the annual statewide youth advocacy event, Speak Hard. Youth Ambassadors will become statewide leaders for legislative advocacy and provide a much needed unified youth voice. Congratulations Brittany!

September 15
September

The rush is over, classrooms have been located, and each freshman can actually use their combination and open their own locker – most of the time.  It has been a great first three weeks of school here at Wright City High School and all of us are beginning to settle into the rhythm and flow of teaching, learning, and ensuring the successes of each of our students.

As the school year opened, the high school received some great news in regards to our Class of 2011’s ACT scores and college readiness benchmarks.  The Class of 2011 had 28% of its students score at or above the national average on the ACT and raised the school’s composite ACT score by 0.6 to a 20.1.   Both of these data points are the highest since 2007.  Additionally, the Class of 2011 had 19% of its students meet all four college readiness benchmarks.  Two years ago, that number was 4% and one year ago it was 9%.  The hard work of a dedicated staff and senior class helped to quadruple our percentage in just 2 years.

As the preliminary APR numbers came out for the district in early August, our report showed that the HS did not meet the graduation rate for the Class of 2011.  Although this news came as a shock and was disappointing, Mr. Clark, Mr. Smith, Kathy Lewis, Kelly Brooks, Laura Prenger, Konee Box, and David Buck worked hard to find out where we had errors and correct those mistakes quickly.  After a month of much legwork and angst as we waited for the report to be updated, we are happy to report that the HS did in fact meet graduation rate for the Class of 2011 and helped our district secure another APR point.

At graduation last year I spoke about the successes of the Class of 2011.  I spoke about both their academic and athletic successes. I also spoke about how proud I was of the maturation process that each of them had endured throughout their four year journey here at Wright City High School.  As I left that day, I began to think about what it means to be a successful graduate of Wright City High School.  As the 2011-2012 school year began, I challenged the staff to provide me with a statement that embodied what it meant to be a successful Wright City High School graduate.  After individual work, small group work, department meetings and grade-level meetings, it has been decided that a successful Wright City graduate is a socially responsible, self-motivated lifelong learner who is able to create and achieve individual goals throughout life.  It is a pleasure to work with such a dedicated staff that provides opportunities and challenges all students to be successful each and every day.

 Mr. Shawn Brown, WHS Principal
