Attention Parents and Family Members,

Did you know that your student’s teacher often stays hours after school, sometimes working on weekends, to prepare lesson plans and student activities? It has been a few years since Wright City West Elementary has had a strong Volunteer Force of Parents and Community Members.

Could you spare a few hours a month to help our teachers? Simple tasks such as disassembling bulletin boards, making copies and laminating would allow the teachers more time to prep time for our children’s educational experience. If you are not able to volunteer during school hours, some items may be taken home to complete.
We will be hosting a Volunteer Training meeting on February 20th at 6:30 at the Wright City West Elementary Library.
If you are interested in helping, but cannot attend the meeting, please call me at 745-7955 or email AllisonLConn@gmail.com
Sincerely,

Allison Conn

Parent/ Volunteer

Headphones in the Computer Lab
 earbuds.jpg
Students who attend West Elementary will be able to bring in their own personal headphones to use in the lab.  Up until now all students shared the headphones in the lab, but beginning this week students may bring their own set in to use.  If a student chooses to bring their own they will need to remain in the lab for the remainder of the school year.  At the end of they year they will be given the choice to take their headphones home or leave them for the next year.  All headphones will be stored in a plastic ziploc bag and in a plastic tote with their grade and teachers name on it.  Students can bring in regular headband type headphones or they can bring the earbud type.  I will still have headphones available if a student chooses not to bring their own set.  Please be sure the plug is a 3.5 mm plug, this is the smaller plug.  If you have any questions please email me at suzanne.gaskill@wrightcity.k12.mo.us.

Reading Groups
Mrs. Luigs

The afternoons in room 165 are filled with small reading groups of fourth and fifth graders.  Soon, we will jump into reading some level appropriate novels and I couldn’t be more excited about sharing these stories with the students.
My fifth graders will be reading Tuck Everlasting and incorporating reading strategies we’ve learned through the research-based QAR strategies (Question Answer Relationships).  We will also focus on unfamiliar vocabulary, journal about the days’ reading and do a big project at the end.  All of these activities will aid the students with their comprehension.   This story was brought to life a few years ago in the form of a movie, but nothing compares to creating the movie in your own mind through your reading.
One fourth grade group will be reading Poppy and also integrating the QAR strategies, vocabulary, journaling and a project.  I know these students will LOVE this story of a mouse’s adventures…I know I did!
The other fourth grade group I see is still working on learning QAR strategies and will soon be able to pick up a wonderful novel to help enhance their learning.  I can’t wait to see what will be picked!

COMPLAINT RESOLUTION PROCEDURE FOR NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND PROGRAMS

This complaint resolution procedure applies to all programs administered by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).   A complaint is a formal allegation that a specific federal or state law or regulation has been violated, misapplied, or misinterpreted by school district personnel or by Department of Education personnel.  Any parent or guardian, surrogate parent, teacher, administrator, school board member, or other person directly involved with an activity, program, or project operated under the general supervision of the Department may file a complaint. Such a complaint must be in writing and signed; it will provide specific details of the situation and indicate the law or regulation that is allegedly being violated, misapplied, or misinterpreted.  The written, signed complaint must be filed and the resolution pursued in accordance with local district policy: GBM

If the issue cannot be resolved at the local level, the complainant may file a complaint with the Missouri Department of Education. If there is not evidence that the parties have attempted in good faith to resolve the complaint at the local level, the Department may require the parties to do so and may provide technical assistance to facilitate such resolution.  Any persons directly affected by the actions of the Department may file a similarly written complaint if they believe state or federal laws or regulations have been violated, misapplied, or misinterpreted by the Department itself.  Anyone wishing more information about this procedure or how complaints are resolved may contact local district or Department personnel.
