The Newspaper (Warren County Record) is part of the learning in room 173. They cut out words from A to Z and then wrote each word in a sentence. Did that build student’s vocabulary? You Bet! You probably know a lot about the plains Indians. Yes, they are the Indians that lived in the mid-west and moved around following the buffalo, living in tee-pees. But if you visit Mrs. Balven’s third grade classroom, you will learn about Indians that lived in the north-eastern part of the United States. You will find out about the Iroquois Nation and how they became known as “the people of the longhouse”. They are working on a presentation that will include a classroom museum and slide show for other third grades and the second grade classes, who also study Indians as part of their curriculum. Parents are invited to attend a presentation on December 16, at 2:30. Room 173’s students are also working hard on multiplication and division skills, studying about Light Energy, and reading comprehension strategies. They have learned about legends and are even retelling one in their own words, The Legend of the Christmas Spider. Writing skills and using descriptive language as well as correct capitalization and punctuation are being reviewed and reinforced as they create their personal version of the legend. The room is not only filled with the excitement of the season, but definitely with the excitement of learning!
