Computer and Art Can Go Together

Over the past month first grade students have been hard at work on a project which combines computers and art skills. Mrs. Rinearson and I have developed an activity in wich students will type a poem using the computers as well as create a picture about the poem. The end result is going to be a beautiful Valentine's Day card for their family.
I wanted to create an activity in which students could work on their typing skills but also incorporate some artistic abilities, but I knew I would not have time to do both before Valentines Day so I got together with Mrs. Rinearson and we came up with this idea.
I have used the poem to teach students how to locate letters on the keyboard, how to format their typing by centering their work on the page and how to format font types. I will also be discussing how to print their work when finished. We have spent a great deal of time on the typing part since most students in first grade are not able to touch type. Overall I am very proud of what the students have accomplished in such a short amount of time.
When the students are finished with their typing they will print it out the mat it on a piece of construction paper with their art project mounted on the other side. They will then fold the paper in half to create a card which they will give to their family on Valentine's Day.
