NEWS FROM 3RD GRADE
MRS. SUTTON’S CLASSROOM
Students in third grade have recently finished our second round of fluency and math assessments. Many students have made gains in both of these areas. Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression. Our overall goal by the end of the year is to have all students reading fluently at around 120 words per minute.
In math we have just finished our chapter on solids and shapes. We learned how many faces, edges and vertices are on 3D shapes. We learned about different types of angles and different types of triangles. We will be moving on and learning about symmetry and congruency next week. Students are also working on their multiplication facts.
Bears, snakes, tornadoes and dogs are just a few of the topics students have been learning about during our nonfiction unit. Students are learning how to ask questions in nonfiction text, using the nonfiction text features to find important details and determining what is important. Students have applied these techniques in our solar system unit in science as well.
Finally, in writing, students have been writing friendly letters from different characters point-of-view. After reading picture books, students will assume the role of an important character and write a letter to another important character in the story. Students must know the correct format in writing a friendly letter as well.
