English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Meet Mrs. Heusmann

Hi!  My name is Darla Heusmann. I am the ESL teacher and coordinator for the Wright City School District.
I teach English to speakers of other languages for all grades Kindergarten through 12th.  I travel to each building daily to meet in small groups or one-on-one.  It has been very enjoyable getting to know all my students and their families.

K-12 Program Information

Did you know ESL, or English as a Second Language, is an older term?  The more modern term is English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).  The question often asked is "What qualifies a child for this program?"  Children qualify for language screening if they have any one of the following situations:

  • they speak another language
  • they used to speak another language
  • another language is spoken in their home

The screening determines whether or not they need extra English support.  Qualifying children are English Language Learners (ELLs), or English Learners.  Those who do not qualify will not be receiving extra English support.
